got the bsci exam cert guide

my copy of cisco’s “ccnp bsci official exam certification guide” arrived in the mail friday.

i have the “ccnp bcmsn official exam certification guide” as well, but both bsci and bcmsn are a bit down the road. i’m currently working on the iscw as its topics are more closely aligned to what i’m working with at the present time.

good advice?

it’s 3:30am and i’m surfing aimlessly. i’ve been reading a bit on “ccie candidate”. at the bottom of the “still slogging away” post, ethan writes:

“if ccie is important to you and you still have a choice, don’t get married, have kids, or buy a house until after you have your digits. the rest of you feel my pain, i have no doubt.”

the girlfriend and i have been talking a little about the future and marriage lately (nothing serious, trust me) so those words really hit me. i’m not working on the ccie just yet — eventually; have to knock out the ccnp first — but it’s definitely something i’ll keep in mind!

thanks, ethan!

ccna certified

last tuesday i passed the icnd1 exam, the first of two to complete the requirements for the cisco certified network associate certificate. yesterday i sat for — and passed — the icnd2 exam. shortly after midnight, i received the “congratulations on becoming cisco certified!” e-mail from cisco, meaning i am officially a ccna (i also hold mcp and gcwn certifications, along with a few from comptia).

next up will be the ccnp, i think. ccnp requires the successful completion of four exams:

i’m currently debating which to concentrate on first…

just passed icnd1 640-822 cisco exam

been playing around with dynamips the last three or four days as a “refresher” for some things i don’t use often (e.g. rip) and scheduled the cisco icnd1 640-822 exam last night. got up late (go figure) due to not changing the time on my alarm clock sunday but still managed to get there and take the test.

passed it (922 out of 1000) and am now a “cisco certified entry networking technician” (ccent). i’ll probably wait a few weeks and then go take the icnd2 test (to complete the ccna). i just found out that there’s a 180-day waiting period if you don’t pass, however, so i want to make sure i’m adequately prepared!

life goals

this is a list of some of my “life goals” — things that i want to do at some point in my life. i usually track my short-term goals elsewhere (such as vitalist, my gtd system of choice), but it never hurts to make a list of things you want to do “someday” and refer to it often to keep you on track. a lot of these i will never get around to, for various reasons, and i’m fine with that.

with that, i present to you my list of “life goals”. it will be revised often and the list is not in any particular order.

great, chantix increases suicide risk

well, this is just wonderful. a month ago when i posted my goals, number two on the list was “stop smoking”:

“okay, so this one is so typical, but it’s true. i’ve tried it before but i’ve never been successful for very long. i’ve been reading and hearing a lot about a new drug called chantix, however. i’ve been meaning to get an appointment set up with a doctor so that i can get a prescription (h.r. told me that our insurance covers it), but i haven’t done it yet. hmm, i should add that to my to-do lists. there, done!”

i’ve kinda failed on this one because i haven’t even set up an appointment to see my doctor so that i could get a prescription. in hindsight, it’s probably good. i just read “quit-smoking drug may raise suicide risk”, which states:

“there’s increasing evidence that the smoking-cessation drug chantix is linked to serious “neuropsychiatric” side effects, including agitation, depressed mood and even suicide, u.s. health officials said friday.”

the wall street journal ran a similar article today, “fda issues health advisory on pfizer’s chantix tablets”, which begins:

“the food and drug administration said it is ‘increasingly likely’ that pfizer inc.’s smoking-cessation drug chantix may be tied to serious psychiatric symptoms. the fda’s comment is part of a public health advisory issued friday.”

well isn’t that just wonderful?

getting the new year started right

following the theme of getting my life in order, i wanted to share a few links to articles about that exact thing:

lots of good suggestions in those articles.
